“Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death”

– Auntie Mame

My mother was unhappy in the later years of her life. She would always talk longingly about things she wanted to do, but she never did them. I don’t think she was a lot different from other aging mothers who have lost a spouse or who are self-isolated.

After she died, and the will was read, we discovered that she had almost a million dollars of stock that she never touched.

Now in my later years, I’ve learned that my mother was a victim of her mindsets. She could have done all the the things she wanted to do, but her mindsets were holding her back.

“Mindsets are just beliefs”, according to Carol Dweck, the author of the groundbraking book, Mindset. “They’re powerful beliefs, but they’re just something in your mind, and you can change your mind.”

My mother had beliefs about herself, other people, the world, and her role in it, that held her back from pursuing the happiness that she deserved in the later years of her life.

I have a certificate in Mindset Management from The Modern Elder Academy. I wish I could go back and have a conversation with her knowing what I know now about how to change our minds.

Are your mindsets holding you back? Here’s a quick way to uncover some of those gremlins. Just complete this sentence:

I would really like to __________________________, but ___________________________________.

Your mindset is probably in your but.

(Sorry about that. It was too good to pass up)
